Giving back to Bowen

The BOWEN ISLAND COMMUNITY FOUNDATION (BICF) was established by and for the community, to build and manage endowment funds to improve the artistic, cultural, educational, environmental, recreational and social well-being of residents of Bowen Island. BICF Endowment Funds provide our community organizations and residents the opportunity to access financial support for their important contributions to island life.

The Foundation relies upon support from people like you - a cross-section of Bowen Islanders, friends of Bowen and businesses - to create endowed funds that make the work of the Foundation possible.

Our Mission

To enrich the quality of life on Bowen Island, BC, Canada, by:
  • Attracting, developing, and managing permanent endowment funds through responsible stewardship.

  • Assessing and responding to existing, emerging, and changing community needs through grants to eligible organizations.

  • Providing a way for individuals and organizations with varied interests and levels of giving to contribute back to the Bowen Island community both during and after their lifetime.

NEWS: 2012 Major Grant Initiative - Call for Proposals

Over the past seven years, the Bowen Island Community Foundation has provided nearly $35,000 from its primary fund - the Community Endowment Fund - to many community organizations and initiatives. In 2011 we decided to try to have a more significant impact on one qualifying organization by initiating a major grant initiative of $5,000. This year we've decided to repeat this funding model and offer another $5,000 for a deserving organization who meet our granting criteria. Submissions are due: April 22, 2012.

What is a Community Foundation?

A community foundation is a collection of charitable gifts both large and small. These gifts are pooled and invested and the investment income is distributed as grants to local charitable organizations. The capital is never touched and continues to grow with each new gift, generating income to meet a wide range of community interests and needs for years to come.

Community foundations are registered with the Canadian Customs and Revenue Agency as tax-exempt "public foundations". They have a duty to account to the community for the use of these funds.
