January 2005 Grants Awarded

One of the tenets of the Bowen Island Community Foundation’s Mission Statement is: To provide for the enrichment of the quality of life on Bowen Island by providing philanthropic leadership in our community.

Through its association with the Vancouver Foundation, the Bowen Island Community Foundation was able to award a second round of Community Grants to some of Bowen’s Charitable Organizations.

  • Tir-na-nOg Theatre School Society - $750.00 to be used towards the materials cost of a stage and stands for raised audience seating in the new Tir-na-nOg Theatre School building. These will become permanent fixtures in the facility, and so will serve the community for generations to come. The plan is to have the stage and audience seating in place for the Festival of Plays in May 2005.

  • Seniors Keeping Young (SKY) - $750.00 to assist the organization in obtaining new exercise equipment; mats, weights, etc and to buy supplies, materials etc. to allow them to enter the Bowfest Parade and organize events such as the fashion show they held last summer.

  • "Real Learning” project title " Get' n Real" - $750.00 An experiential learning program for youth at risk. It involves 3 areas of growth: intra-personal skills, inter-personal skills and technical life skills with the goal of improving self-esteem. Using practical exercises, at risk youth are encouraged to develop intra-personal skills such as integrity, courage and determination; inter-personal skills such as teamwork, compassion and leadership; and technical life skills such as goal setting, risk management and decision-making.

  • Island Pacific School - a grant of $750.00 towards the purchase of martial arts training equipment and supplies.

  • Bowen Island Teen Centre - $1000.00 for the 'Youth Power: Learn to Use It” programme. A youth leadership training opportunity. This is a “train the trainer” initiative that involves educating a group of older teens in the finer points of leadership development and having them, in turn, train grade 7 students at BICS and/or IPS in leadership skills to empower all the youth to make positive changes in their community.

  • Bowen Island Arts Council - $1000.00 A project that is directed toward strengthening local community through artistic performance. Pauline Le Bel has agreed to write a play about B.I. for the Arts Council tentatively entitled Voices in the Sound, which will be the highlight of their Heritage Festival in July 2005. This will give the community a sense of history to achieve a sense of place. With this dramatic telling of the Bowen Story, the island, as a community, will come to know each other better and deepen our connection to the land.

Jan. 2004 Grants Awarded

  • Seniors Keeping Young (SKY) wanted so much to be able to continue their participation in the DRAGON BOAT festival and through a $1,000 donation they will be able to rent space for ongoing seniors activities and to purchase the needed equipment to fulfill that dream.

  • Tir-Na_Nog Theatre School received $1,000 to purchase a new Laser Printer for theatre communications. An ink-Jet, although nice to be able to print in colour, was extremely expensive to operate. Through this grant, the school hopes to be able to control some of those printing costs.

  • Bowen Island Gymnastics Club is hosting a world-class event this year and with the $1,000 from the Bowen Island Community Foundation will be able to purchase a new table vault for the club. Upgrading equipment is part of an overall safety upgrading program of the club and the Foundation is pleased to assist in the initial upgrade.

  • Bowen Island Preschool and Community Daycare Society will utilize the Community Foundation’s $750 grant to launch Shake, Rattle and Roll, which is a project to deliver music classes to young children.

  • Bowen Island Teen Centre Society will utilize the Foundation’s grant of $750 to develop a Bowen Island youth-directed website built in an Internet café setting, based on a mentorship approach. As a result of this initiative, Bowen’s Youth will have an opportunity to learn graphic design and web development to create an online environment for youth community building, a forum for art and writing and a resource for employment and homework.
